Scheduled Job Health

Published by NowForgefirst-party

What it does

Lists every scheduled job on your instance with the three things the platform never shows you together: whether anything is still going to run it, whether the scheduler has already passed it by, and whose access it runs with.

Then it tells you, in a sentence, whether any of that needs you today.

It cannot change a job, a trigger, or anything else. It has no way to.

The finding that justifies installing it

A job running as somebody who has left.

A scheduled job runs with the rights of its run-as user. When that person leaves and their account is deactivated, one of two things happens, and both are quiet: the job starts failing every night and nobody is watching that log, or it keeps running with the access of somebody your company believes has none.

There is no screen in the platform that shows you this. You would have to open each job, note the run-as user, and check whether that account is still active — for every job, by hand, and again next quarter.

This is the report that would have told you.

What else it looks for

Active but not scheduled - The job recurs, it is switched on, and the scheduler has no entry for it. Nothing is going to run it. Usually the trigger was removed, or never recreated after a change. Overdue - The scheduler expected this to run and it has not. A job stuck like this is the one nobody notices for weeks. Scheduled more than once - Several scheduler entries point at one job, so it can run more than once per period. Harmless for a report, not harmless for anything that writes. Runs as a dormant account - The run-as user has not signed in for over a year. Worth confirming the account is still meant to exist. Scheduler entry with no job - Left behind by a job that is gone. Clutter, but it makes the queue harder to read.

Two things it deliberately does not report

Both were in the first version. Both were measured against a real instance before release, and both were removed.

105 jobs reported as overdue, every single one on demand. A job with no schedule cannot be late for one — it waits to be triggered, and its scheduler entry sits in the past quite legitimately.

11 jobs reported as unscheduled, every single one a one-shot. A job with a run type of once has already had its moment. It has no scheduler entry because it does not need one.

Both would have been the headline number on the first run, and both were entirely false. A tool that cries wolf a hundred times is worse than no tool, because the one finding that matters is buried in the noise.

A sentence, not a score

The report ends with a sentence saying how many jobs it looked at and whether any of them need attention now.

Deliberately not a number out of a hundred. A score invites a threshold, a threshold invites somebody deciding that seven is acceptable, and after that nobody reads the detail again.

What installing it costs you

Nothing to configure, nothing to connect, nothing to trust with a credential.

It stores nothing. There is no table in this application. Every answer is computed when you press the button and thrown away when you close the page. That means nothing at rest, nothing to corrupt, nothing to export before you remove it, and an uninstall that cannot leave residue because there is none to leave.

It never writes. Not to a job, not to a trigger, not to a property. That is not a promise in a document — it is a test in the shipped ATF suite that reads every script in the application and fails if any of them can modify the scheduler.

It stops reading at 2000 rows per source and tells you when it did. A stuck scheduler queue is exactly the estate this is meant to help, and walking all of it is how a diagnostic becomes the outage.

One role, x_nf_jobs.user, because there is nothing to separate. It shows you what you could already read by opening the jobs list yourself. It just does the reading.

Why it is free

It is the smallest useful thing we can give away that still shows how we build: one screen, one role, no tables, and a documented reason for every decision in it. If it earns your trust, our paid work is built the same way.
